The Independent Atelier

of Shaun Leane

Leaving his eponymous House in 2024, Shaun Leane founded 12; an independent couture-jewellery atelier, the focal point of artistic credibility and twenty-first-century spectatorship. It is a new chapter for master jeweller Leane, the visionary craftsman commanding some of the world’s most exquisite, jewelled creations. It is an evolution of the designer’s creativity and the personal punctuation in his career as a designer of eminence.

Shaun Leane’s purist vision is that true perfection takes time. His prestigious career spans four decades and made him a global cultural authority, his architectural jewels proving so influential that they are a part of modern design history. Beginning with his show-stopping body adornment for Alexander McQueen, Leane’s collaborative spirit is the defining principle in creating 12.

12 encapsulates Leane’s purist vision that true perfection takes time. His atelier will limit commissions to those that occupy three expressions;  each Fine Jewellery piece must celebrate the finest in gems and craftsmanship, each must be Visionary,  and each piece must be Objet d’Art. Within each of these three expressions 12 will create; exquisite Fine Jewellery pieces in classic designs using traditional techniques and pure materials only; Visionary pieces that are show-stopping body adornments in line with the heritage of the atelier; Objet d'Art that is bejewelled sculpture and spectacular art creations with architectural elements.

Twelve individual commissions begin each year in conversation with the client. Twelve bespoke creations only are then made in seclusion through private discussions between the client and the artist. Leane will open his private ateliers across London, Paris and Antwerp where designs will pass through a lineage of specialist artisans and craftsmen. Each couture-piece is crafted using unique and exceptional materials and gemstones.

No other jeweller is as adept at harnessing the provocative mood of the 21st century and capturing the time we are in.  His trajectory is a tale of modern romance, told across 320 pages in his hardcover monograph, Shaun Leane; his work brought to life through unseen photographs by Ann Ray, featuring artwork by photographer Nick Knight and other renowned contemporaries.  Texts written by art historian Claire Wilcox, jewellery historian Vivienne Becker and jewellery expert Joanna Hardy.

For forty years, Shaun Leane’s jewels are the connection between the prominent 21st-century women of style.  He appeals to a new generation of artists, drawn by a unique style that captures the human condition.  Whether it be his Diamond Butterfly Brooch in collaboration with Damien Hirst, part of Cabinet of Curiosities with ShowStudio, human hair for Sam Taylor-Johnson's 18th century memorial pendant, or Leane’s sensitive Flora leitmotif in his Art Nouveau-inspired bronzed building facade in Kensington, London, his work thrives.

Dualities present in Shaun Leane’s work as intriguing and enthralling.  Contemporary jewels that reinforce religious iconography; rubies that evoke women as warriors; black pearls to make men less severe; and full body adornments that mix surrealism and the fanciful.  The Shaun Leane monograph is a human document, chronicling the iconoclastic choices we make for self-expression.  Leane arouses the spirit buried in our subconscious.
